This blog is opened to create a common platform for those who are working in the Travel & Distribution, Hospitality, Airlines, Transportation & Logistics Sectors. I like to encourage professionals working in these industries to share their thoughts on the latest developments, industry & technology trends and challenges, standard standards and best practices, solution needs and alternatives.

This industry is characterised by early adoption of technology (and hence deployment of many legacy systems that are disparate in nature), many products that are still evolving, emergence of platform based solutions etc. The constant change in business models and operations in a globalised environment, continuos evolution of technology and software makes it more demanding and ambiguous for the business users as to chosing a solution for their requirements.

This platform is the right place to network to find out the best solution catering to their needs.

The Travel and Transportation Industry is one of the first one' to be affected through changes in regulatory environment, fluctuation in crude oil prices, globalization of trade etc. It deserves mention that the industry and the players including suppliers are playing a fine balance in this environment. Question to be asked in critical times such as this when the entire industry is faced with a meltdown, is the sustainability of transportation systems and their future. 1) Western countries have built capacities at some point in time, that are not fully utilized and atleast some of it seem to have become redundant. 2) On the other hand, the emerging economies are faced with acute resource/infrastructure crunch. When the world attention got diverted to building up infrastructure in countries such as India, this lead to an infrastructure boom which filtered to affiliated sectors including the reality sector. Notwithstanding the above, with the shortage of money supply #due to liquidity crisis#, the FII's are selling their stakes and investment in order to overcome the short term crisis. Hence the reality sector "bubble" if you may call it appears to have burst. This is clear evidence that many times the policy frame works, decisions, plans and investments are not commensurate with real needs. It is driven by a sense of hype, and human psychology rather than efficiently planned and executed systems, processes and methodologies. The need of the hour is awareness, education, pragmatic but regulated environment, policies and frameworks. This also applies to the technologies that we use, solutions people and companies provide/ expect. It is my endeavor that people use this medium to debate as well as propose the “best-in-class” solutions that can be used by the Travel and Transportation industry.

Logistics is one of the booming sector in India. Companies have just started realising the benefits like cost benefit and increased customer satisfaction that efficient logistics can bring in. But the biggest challenge any logistics company faces is the lack of technology. An efficient logistics software is the need of the hour.

There are a few trends that are very likely to be big issues for the future - 1. Offshoring of travel by India MNC's . This trends has already started and is likely to catch pace very quickly . 2. related to this is the growth of the online booking business for corporate travel inIndia . This is quite distinct from the retail online booking space . With the commoditization of travel , this will be the future of corporate travel in India . 3. Consulting focus on corporate travel management . Travel is a often neglcted function where the primary focus is to minimize the per ticekt costs , to the exlcusion of more broader and strategic corporate objectives such as preferred vendor c ontracting , travel policy and compliance management , management information systems and consolidation of spend across all aspects of T& E expense management .
